During the C19 lockdowns many government agencies, and individual businesses, began to advocate for and develop phone applications that would alert users if they came into contact with C19 exposed individuals. These devices can be set to listen for keywords, like “Alexa”, or “OK Google”, or for words like “sick”, “coronavirus”, etc… Assume that the government determines that it is in the nation’s interest to require tracing apps on phones and in homes (as a functionality in Amazon echo, for instance). These tracing apps would track whom infected users are in contact with, and then notify other users with a warning. They also would notify the relevant healthcare authorities. This on the surface sounds great, but there are privacy issues that implicate both the government and the companies involved.
