Characteristics of an effective leader? In what ways do you demonstrate those characteristics? In what ways can you improve?As an HR Professional, I believe the characteristics of an effective leader comprise of establishing trust with employees at all levels of the organization, cultivating ideas, inspiring confidence and a clearly conveyed vision. Through the application of these characteristics, a leader is able to gain consensus and consensus-style leadership encourages employees to take an active role in the company’s success.Martin Luther King Jr. once said “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.” Without the consensus of a team, a leader is unable to articulate and develop a shared strategic vision and without a shared vision the team will make strides towards achieving strategic goals but will never fully attain them.Establishing trust with employees an stakeholders all levels of an organization is important because they all can contribute to the success or failure of a leader. For example, members of upper management often fail to solicit feedback from front line staff prior to making decisions that directly impact them. They often refer to reports and feedback from senior leadership. An effective leader will do the opposite. He or she realizes that there is data that cannot be captured in a report that can only be obtained directly from the source. Input from front-line staff and stakeholders enables the leader to make a more informed decision, provides opportunity for face-time with the staff and will motivate the employees to provide feedback if they are able to see the residual benefits of doing so. This will also reduce efforts to undermine a leader’s vision by staff who feel undervalued.Creating an environment where employees can cultivate ideas will promote creativity and pave the way for increased productivity. Employees can be underutilized when leaders mistakenly rely on immediate supervisors to leverage the strengths of their staff. However, most supervisors improperly administer their 360 assessments and do not realize to correlation between employee buy-in and productivity. An effective leader will create an environment where employees have more opportunities to work on cross-functional team projects so they can demonstrate their creativity as well as their skills sets in other areas. When an employee sees their ideas manifest into something great and their leadership embrace their mistakes as learning moments, it inspires confidence in their abilities and increase participation. A clearly conveyed vision is necessary in order to effectuate a strategic plan. When a vision is unclear, it is typically because it is on a document that employees do not see or connect to every-day tasks. An effective leader should make it their mission help employees make the connection and be willing to modify the vision when there is a disconnect.Finally establishing measureable, common goals and knowing when and how to adjust when they are misaligned helps to mold consensus. Indicators of misalignment can be revealed via reports or employee feedback and it is important not to dismiss the negative feedback since it has value as well. I demonstrate these characteristics by having an entrepreneurial work style and involving stakeholders and key staff members where opportunities for consensus exist.
