Notable among advanced industrial countries, the US lacks extensive universal social programs which might have more vigorously mitigated the social, racial, and economic impacts of recent epidemiological events. Before and during these events, however, two policy proposals have gained public traction that might otherwise have not – universal basic income and Medicare-for-all.
