Consider not only the themes of your selected works of literature, but also how the author conveys those themes. Through which devices does the author convey meaning and where? With these thoughts in mind, craft an essay in which you compare an author’s themes and use of literary elements to that of another author working within a different medium.
Compare and contrast and two works of writing (songs, poems, tv series, video games, films, novels, etc). Do the writers of your selected works build upon the same themes as each other? How do each of the writers employ alliteration, point-of-view, character, allusion, irony, mood/tone, narrative, etc. in their work to convey meaning?
Your essay should demonstrate your ability to interpret both your selected works, as well as give insight into how the respective writers use language to elevate a concept, idea, or message. Your essay should examine what is similar between the two works (perhaps both writers portray a character in the same fashion, or impose a sudden tonal shift at a key moment) as well as what is different (perhaps your song/poem uses rhyme to draw comparisons, while Melville uses another method).
Ultimately, your goal is to show, through a close-reading of two texts of different mediums, that literature can exist and succeed in multiple forms, each of which just as worthy of analysis as the other.
Remember – it is crucial that your paper be argumentative/debatable and united by a strong thesis statement (introduction-paragraph-ending declaration of intent)!
