Disaster Risk Assessment Scenario
Shady town is a small country town the in North Queensland. Based on the last census it has a population of 2,517 people, with 48% female and 52% male. The median age of the population is 37 years. Much of the employment is in agriculture including tropical fruit, sugar cane, coffee, horticulture and dairy. It has a tropical climate with generally hot and humid summers and milder dryer winters. The average annual rainfall is 1992mm on an average 154 days with most of the rain occurring during the summer between January and March. From the around December to March the monsoons usually come along with warm to hot, humid conditions and the possibility of thunderstorms Typical daytime min/max temperature ranges are 23C/31C in mid-Summer and 18C/26C in mid-Winter.
Each year in December there is a 6-day music festival. Usually around 130,000 – 150,000 people from all over the globe attend plus all the national and international artists, musicians and presenters, as well as all the food and drink vendors and other vendors selling merchandise, volunteers and organisers. The festival closes each year with a spectacular Fireworks Event on the last evening. The site where the festival takes place is old dairy land, with surrounded by tropical rain forest. During the festival a mini-village or town builds up with around 500 contractors and volunteers building the village in the week before the festival. During the festival it becomes a large tent city with most people staying in tents for the six nights of the festival as Shady town does not have enough accommodation for all these annual visitors. Shower and toilet facilities are available in all camping grounds and there is the General Store for basic supplies.
