Imagine living in a world where the government controls all aspects of your life – your freedom, your rights, your opportunities. Ruling through a central power, this government acts in its own self-interest and limits the political freedoms of the people over whom it rules.

Living in the western part of the world under democratic governments this may seem like a fictional dystopian type of world. But, unfortunately, this is the reality for millions of people who live under a social compact dictated by an aristocratic state (Cerutti, 2017, p 17). This essay argues that the social compact is dictated by the state because the state is responsible for regulating the aspects of society that make up the social contract.
