his assig
nment, you will write an interpretation and evaluation of a work of literature
and a film adaptation of the same work. This means that for your topic, you must choose a book
that has been made into a movie, read the book and watch the movie, and write abou
t them,
following this format:
1.
Reading and watching log: Even if these are works that you have read and viewed before,
you must read/watch again for this assignment and write down your immediate reactions
in a journal format. Your journal should includ
e the date of reading/viewing and
recording your thoughts.
2.
Interpretation of both works: Your interpretation should address and make a
claim
about
at least one of the elements of story outlined in your textbook
(for ex
ample, regarding
the
ps
ycholog
ical state of a ch
aracter, or the way the
setting
affects the meaning
, or
a theme,
etc.
)
.
You should support the claim with tex
tual support
(paraphrased and quoted
material)
that backs up your claim about the meaning of the works
.
3.
Evaluation: Your
evaluation should consider both works and make a judgment about
them. This can contrast the works (ex. The main character in the book is stronger because
__________; the film is more powerful because_____________; the film is a poor
adaptation because____
________________) OR focus on an element that both share for
an overall evaluation (ex. Both the novel and the film make an important statement
about__________. Even though they do it differently; they both do it well, etc.)
At this point, you may alr
eady know which works you will choose. If you do not, there is
a list of ideas in the learning module. Choose soon and well, and happy reading/viewing!
You must include citat
ions for the book and the movie in your list of Works Cited. All
references to the book must include page numbers. In addition, if you use sources to assist in
your evaluation or interpretation, you must cite them accordingly. For example, if you look up,
“What makes a good ______?” for a list of criteria, you should cite your source for those criteria.
Be sure to document properly, following the MLA style of documentation.
Your essay MUST include ALL
these steps to be considered for a grade.
