Task 3 (60%): Write an essay (4000-4500 words) on the topic: How can English teachers meet the challenge of creating a learner-centred, communicative, intercultural classroom to achieve optimal student learning outcomes. The essay could be structured into three brief literature reviews on the topic of (i) autonomous learning, (ii) Communicative Language Teaching, and (iii) intercultural language learning. You need to include your reflections on teaching and learning in the classroom context with reference to theory and research on language, language teaching and learning in your overview. Discussion of strategies for effective language teaching and learner skills development should also be included.

This extended essay needs to cover three areas of research literature: learner autonomy, CLT and intercultural language teaching. You may start with an overview of the literature together or one by one (it is your choice) and then discuss selectively the research (e.g., arguments, findings, techniques, etc) by way of making connections to teaching and learning in your local context, and offering techniques/examples.
In your writing you may include your reflections on aspects of teaching (e.g. teaching in your local context in different skill areas), and ways or strategies that may be used for teaching informed by the research in the future.
Your focus on the contents (of the literature) may be triggered by a difficulty or concern that has arisen from your teaching. The reading and essay writing is a way for you to understand alternative instructional practices as reported in the research studies, and possibilities for them to be incorporated into you design and teaching of the target language.
