Essay Question: Is there a relationship between radical right-wing politics and violence? Core Readings (a) Leonard Weinberg and Eliot Assoudeh, Political Violence and the Radical Right, Chapter 21 in Jens Rydgren (2018) The Oxford Handbook of the Radical Right, Oxford University Press (b) Horgan, J., Altier, M. B., Shortland, N., & Taylor, M. (2017). Walking away: the disengagement and de-radicalization of a violent right-wing extremist. (c) Berntzen, Lars Erik, and Sveinung Sandberg. “The collective nature of lone wolf terrorism: Anders Behring Breivik and the anti-Islamic social movement.” Terrorism and Political Violence 26.5 (2014): 759-779. Essay Guidelines and Tips: 1. Argument: Clearly and critically, answer the question directly in your introduction and conclusion. Be clear and precise with the point that you want to put across and lay it out. Tell the reader how you are going to answer the question. Set out the structure at the beginning so that the reader knows where you are going and why. 2. Structure: Make sure that your argument is logically structured, so that one part of the argument relates to and flows smoothly from the other. Every time you finish writing a paragraph, ask yourself how has this paragraph contributed to answering the question? Think about signposting the argument at certain strategic points in the argument, guide the reader by telling them what will be discussed next: e.g. having covered XXX, we can now turn to look at YYY. Remember to justify the elements/factors/approaches that you choose tell the reader why its important. The essay should have a clear structure that sequences the various parts of the argument in a coherent framework. 3. Analysis over narrative: Dont just tell a story, break down the key factors into their constituent parts and extract the most relevant for answering the question. What is the most important part of the story and why? Its also important to set a context and provide enough detail so that your analysis makes sense to the reader, but do not led the detail obscure the argument that you are trying to make. 4. Reading: You must read a wide range of sources (articles and books) to show that you have mastered the key issues/controversies/cases/theories that you are studying, and communicate this effectively and succinctly. Draw out the connections between the various aspects of the literature. You should use at least eight academic sources, i.e. books, peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters in books/edited volumes. This excludes newspaper articles, web articles etc. (see further below) 5. Do not over-rely on quotes and avoid the use of extensive bloc quotes: If you want to use quotes longer than 40 words, justify why you have chosen to use a lengthy extract and indent it. Remember the essay is meant to be your piece of work hence it is your voice that should come across as clearly as possible, rather than allowing someone else to speak for you. Illustrate your points with examples. Dont just assert something is so, show it by using a good examples to elaborate a particular point. If you have a direct quote or refer to a specific argument in your own words, you must cite the page number. 6. Sources and referencing Do not simply list websites: A URL does not count as a referenced source. There are specific ways to cite webpages, you still need details of publication, source, author, and the date of access. Your mark will suffer if you use less than eight academic sources. Please note that websites do not count as academic sources. Academic sources include peer-reviewed journal articles and books (either single-authored monographs or edited collections). You need to use multiple sources and refer to multiple sources on each page of an argument do not reference whole swathes of your argument with the same source, as this only indicates that you have failed to synthetize material and are simply replicating the points made in a single piece of work. Poor referencing may result in a reduced overall mark for the essay. Referencing properly is an important part of writing essays, so please ensure that you have referenced correctly.
