Overview: This activity is designed to go beyond traditional patient care and will focus on other areas of need within a community. This activity will provide students with the opportunity to focus on innovative solutions to complex issues. For this assignment students will “develop” and app that will help to serve a population. Students will follow key steps in the invention process as explained by the United States Patent and Trademark office (USPTO) as follows: Directions: There are four components to this project: 1) A business plans 2) A sketch of your app that you will provide to “stakeholders” such as town council members, state lawmakers, the local newspaper, and advocacy groups 3) A flowchart explaining how the app works and 4) An App Store web page. Business Plan: 1. Brainstorm issues/problems in the community you are focusing on. Try to focus on problems that you are passionate about. Choose an issue that you would like to improve. Students can gather data including reading local and national news sources and nursing journals to identify a topic. Write out a one-page business plan for the app which includes the following questions: Identify an issue that your app will address. (This should be evidence-based and supported by an article). Identify a target population that is affected by this issue. Who does the problem affect? Is this a vulnerable population? If so, why? (You can choose a larger, such as Individuals over the age of 65 in the United States or you can choose a smaller aggregate, such as Pregnant and Parenting Teenagers under the age of 18 years in Louisville, Kentucky). Who is the app is intended for? Is this an app that nurses and other health professionals will use? Is than an app for client use? Both? Other? Explain how your app invention will aid in and/or solve the problem? How will this app address the social determinants of health? Identify key informants who would be able to provide information in the development of this topic. Who would you approach to help in making this app a reality? Your business plan should be in APA format with in-text citations and references to support your ideas. A title sheet in APA format is required. A reference sheet in APA format is required. 2. Sketch the App Be creative! You can have a digital drawing, or you can draw it and upload your drawing. Every app starts with an idea. It doesn’t need to be big, ground-breaking or clever. Just an idea is good enough. Sketch out your app idea with pen and paper. The goal is to make the idea tangible. You define how your app works and what its features are, before you start developing the app. It’s as simple as that! You don’t need any special tools to sketch your app idea. A pen and a notepad is enough. Start sketching, make a list of features, and see if the idea comes to life on paper. You may find it helpful to separate the features of the app into two groups: “must-haves” and “nice-to-haves”. The must-haves are features that your app can’t do without, and the nice-to-haves are features that are great but not crucial. When you make an app, you want the app to be as lean and mean as possible. That’s called a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). When you focus on what matters, you speed up your app development process and make your app more resilient against setbacks. A good app does one thing well. Some examples: A note-taking app like “Bear”is good at taking notes A transportation app like “Uber” helps people go from A to B A game app like “Two Dots” is good at entertaining people It’s tempting to make an app with a lot of features. This only obscures the one thing your app is good at. Make sure your app does one thing only and does it well! *Be sure to include a hashtag(s) that would be used for someone to easily find your app. 3) Develop a Flowchart: Include a flow chart of how your app works. Use arrows and draw as many description boxes as your app requires. You may hand draw this (in a neat and organized manner) or create this digitally using Microsoft Word or another program. 4) App Store Page Include an App store page of what your app will look like. Include the following information · The app’s name · A brief description of the app · A couple customer reviews.
