This is a coursework for a module whose outcome is to produce an in-depth analysis of a construction or engineering programme/project. The complementary module Project Management Principles introduce the concept and the models of project management which are in use today. Project management practice in construction is well establish though not necessarily as efficient and effective as it could be. The construction industry in UK and other countries are undergoing change. In the UK for instance, the Latham, Egan and more recent reports such as the Government Construction Strategy, though recognising pockets of good practice, highlighted areas particularly to do with quality, waste and customer satisfaction that needed attention and cultural change. Public procurement methods are constantly overhaul and subject to choose. These modules aimed at applying the role of the project manager to a project in the strategic planning and management stages.

Produce an in-depth analysis of a construction or engineering programme

The module covers the themes of project objectives and master planning, project strategy in areas. Such as risk, value, programme, cost, health and safety, sustainability and development of project organisations and communications. We aim to apply generic principles in the specific context of construction and make extensive use of project case studies as a vehicle for learning. Case studies will include UK and international projects. The case studies are not necessarily provided as examples of best practice, but rather as examples of the project problems, issues and constraints facing project managers in order to challenge current practice, conceptions, systems and procedures. Also, as the basis of stimulating debate, encouraging innovation and promoting continuous improvement and life-long learning.

The module will cover the three main areas as follows, which reflect in the assessment criteria: Project inception and feasibility. Clarifying the client brief and formulating master plans • Development appraisal and also financial planning. Manage stakeholders and the project constraints and environment • Managing risk Strategy • Development of procurement strategy.  Health and safety • Project organisation and communications • Master planning. Change management • Sustainable delivery Team building and professional issues • Team building and leadership • Ethics and professional practice
