Introduction

‘School Children are being Fed genetically Modified foods’. This was a recent headline on a newspaper published by a famous Jamaican Media company ‘The Gleaner’ (Serju, 2019). In the article, the minister concerned, Audley Shaw, raised grave concerns regarding the perceived health risks to the children as well as the apparent threat to the local farmer. The issue of Genetically Modified (GM) Food is, therefore, not a far-fetched matter in Jamaica. Often, the choice of GM foods is justified by the cheap cost. While this may be true, there are worries about the health risks associated with them, leading to a controversy between scientists who are proponents of its safety and the public who are the skeptic. Additionally, the local farmer cannot match up to the prices of GM foods and is ultimately sidelined. The outcome is the government spending money to import the cheap GM alternative. The local market ends up being flooded with the imports while the farmers produce lack market for their goods both locally and outside the country, hence denying them their much-needed source of income. Imported GM food, therefore, has impacts on the socio-economic development in Jamaica.

Thesis: Although the Importation of GM Foods provides security it also causes a decline in exportation of locally produced goods and exposes plants and humans to possible health risks.
