W.E.B. DuBois, a leading black intellectual and co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), authored several texts on the black experience in the United States and became an outspoken civil rights activist.

Booker T. Washington was born enslaved in 1856. After the Civil War, he founded the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama in 1881 and became a leading advocate of African American progress. W.E.B.
