Critically analyse (as Sneddon did) the 682CE Kedukan Bukit inscription and present 4 linguistic elements that clearly link its language with modern Indonesian/Malay. (5 marks) 2. Then decide which of these languages exerted the most dominant influence on Malay, and why. Use both Week 3 and Week 4 readings to make the comparison. (6 marks) Part 3 Essay (50 marks). Write an essay of 1250 words on ONE of the following topics. (You must follow the normal essay writing rules/conventions applicable at UNE including footnotes/end notes and referencing system.) 1. Critically assess the role of the Dutch colonial government in making ‘high Malay’ the most dominant language in Indonesia up to the defeat of the Dutch by the Japanese in 1942. You may include government policies and their impact on the language. 2. Distinguish low Malay and ‘high Malay, discuss the tensions between them, and explain how and why ‘high Malay’ won and became the most dominant language in the country (becoming the Indonesian National Language).
