Unit 3: Managing Teams and Groups This unit explores the concepts of teams and groups and what they mean for managers. We define teams and groups and basically emphasise that the key difference is that the outcomes of teams are interdependent and bound by psychological contracts. We talk about why teams form, how they form, their dynamics, and how teams can be complex and difficult things to manage and develop, and we talk about when things go wrong in teams. Lastly the unit considers teams and groups within the context of Peter Frost’s toxic emotions and the seven deadly ‘Ins’ of toxic managers, and discuss these in relation to teamwork. Key topics of study: Defining the meanings of teams and groups The concept of group dynamics and the process of group development Categorising common problems in teamwork Identifying and resolve team conflict Toxic emotions and how to deal with them in organisations and teams Unit 4: Managing Leading, Coaching and Motivating Unit 4 covers the main leadership theories and perspectives. We cover the history of leadership research emphasising its breadth and complexity. As such, anyone who seeks to practice, understand, and research leadership is facing a major challenge. We review the changing perspectives of leadership beginning with trait theory, behavioural, situational contingency perspectives, and postmodern concepts of leadership. The unit explained that the two ideas of task orientation and people orientation underpin all leadership theories. We also delve into leadership substitutes, as well as dispersed leadership, and consider the cultural properties of leaders. We include a discussion on coaching, especially as coaching is increasingly an important concept in modern business. Another key issue in leadership is motivation, and subsequently process and content theories of motivation and how leadership is integral to motivating people are discussed. Key topics of study Defining what is meant by leadership and coaching Evaluating the main approaches to leadership theory The changing role of the leader The assumptions underlying motivation theories and their relevance to leadership and coaching The emerging and alternative approaches to leadership and the value of self-leadership Evaluating the concepts of positive psychological capital and authentic leadership The complex relationship between leadership and culture By the end of this unit you need to reflect on the topics you have studied in the past two weeks and how you will be able to apply it to your personal and/or professional life.
