For your first Formal Essay, you will choose a passage from Frankenstein that you regard as significant. The passage should be about a paragraph or so in length (do not choose multiple pages). It should be a passage that you think speaks to the larger themes of the novel and/or that speaks to our world today. In an essay of no more than two pages, you will closely examine the passage and draw conclusions about its meaning. In the first section of your essay, briefly explain the context of the passage (what is happening in the story at this point?). Quoting from the passage, examine the specific language that Shelley uses. What are some of the key words and phrases, and what do they suggest about the characters or plot?In the second section of your essay, draw conclusions about what this passage reveals about the rest of the novel (so far as you’ve read, or as you understand the Frankenstein story generally) and about the world around the novel (Shelley’s time and/or our own world). Does it set up a theme that will become important to the story? Does it reveal or criticize something about Shelley’s day (or are own)? There is no need for a traditional introduction or conclusion. You only have two pages, so make every word count. Jump right into talking about Frankenstein. But do transition from examining the passage to drawing conclusions about it.
