READER RESPONSE PAPERS These should be 1 to 2 pages in length and should engage the text with critical analysis and original thought. Do not summarize. Students should look at these papers as a first step towards their longer papers. Response papers are due before midnight the day on which the reading is due. If responding to a film, then it is due before midnight the next class after we watch the film. Response Papers These are short papers that will range between 1-2 pages and be graded as pass/fail. It must be typed, double-spaced, with one inch margins, use 12 point Times New Roman font, and adhere to all MLA standards. You can choose to focus on various aspects of the works, such as point of view, , plot, characters, setting, tone and style, structure, visual and auditory aesthetics, symbolism and allegory, and ideas and themes. Use these in roads to develop an interpretation of the work, since you will need to demonstrate how the aspects that you choose to focus on support your individual interpretation. Since this is a short paper, narrow your focus to something very specific and go as deep with your interpretation as possible. You should be using specific examples and quotations from the work as well. Use these papers as a trial ground for your final paper. These papers allow you to get outside of your comfort zone and to try new ideas and ways of scholarly interpretation.
