Transition to Clinical Nursing

Philip has just started his shift at 7am when a fellow nurse approaches and states, “You have a new intake in room 232 and she definitely does not speak English so be prepared and good luck!” How should Philip approach the patient? Should a translator be called to walk in the room with him to begin the intake process?

Philip now knows for a fact that the patient has a hard time understanding English so he calls the translator but the translator cannot be there for a half hour. The patient’s daughter who is a nurse at another local hospital shows up and offers to do the translating. Is this acceptable? Why or Why not?
