You do not have to be planning a career as a paralegal or attorney to do this paper. The issue is how the law will affect any career choice you make. (And if you do not know what career you would like then this is the perfect time to research a career you at least have some interest in learning about!). Your career choice is a huge decision and important one. Think long and hard about your choice. Johann Van Goethe could have been speaking about the importance of career choice when he said,
“The important thing in life is to have a great aim and to possess the aptitude and perseverance to attain it.”
Your paper should answer the following questions:
How will the legal system affect my career choice? For example, are there legal requirements to fulfill in order to work in my chosen field?
It is a tough financial period, what are the prospects for my career choice?
What are the salaries in different parts of the USA?
What education and experience will best prepare me for my career choice? Where do I see myself in 5 years and then 20 years?
If you interview individuals already working in your chosen field you may begin your conversation by asking them the following questions:
How did you reach the position you are in now?
What do you like least about your career?
What do you like most about your career?
What advice do you have for a newbie?
Would you do anything differently? If so, what?
Your paper should be researched with multiple sources. For example, you must quote at least 2 individuals who are working in your chosen career.
The quotes may be from a live interview or from professional journals or other sources. You need to include your sources in a bibliography.
You should be using at least 4 different types of sources/references. For example, interviews, magazines, journals, text/book, internet sites, television, radio, etc… Wikipedia is not an acceptable source. It can’t be stated enough, KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SOURCES so that you can prepare the bibliography.
.
Step #2: Paper Format
You should follow Modern Language Association (MLA) format. If you don’t know what the MLA format consists of then ask an SCCC or local librarian where an MLA format book is located.
Your paper should be double-spaced with a cover page (the cover page should include your name, the course name, times and days the course meets and date you are handing in the paper on the lower right hand corner with the title of the paper centered on the cover page).
The writing should be easy to read while grammatically correct and without spelling errors.
Length should be in the 5 page minimum range including the cover page and the bibliography page.
