Data Collection and Analysis Exercise

Data Collection and Analysis Exercise 1: Field Observations •Since you are conducting a qualitative study, you will need to include field observations as part of your data collection procedures. Summarize the method(s) you will use to conduct your observations and then describe how you will code and analyze and interpret the data you gathered and transcribed from participant or nonparticipant observations in your descriptive and reflective field notes answering the questions listed below. Questions
•What, when, how, and who will you observe?•Where will you be situated on the participant/observer continuum?
•How will you collect your descriptive field notes?
•What additional observations will you make in your reflective field notes?
•How will you begin to identify the themes, categories that will emerge as you sort through the raw data?Questions

Questions (continued)
•How will you account for your personal biases and assumptions in your notes/field notes/observations?
•In what ways will you link your conclusions with your research question(s)?
•What information will you use from supplemental readings that focus on your topic? (please cite at least 5 of your sources)
•What questions do you still have about data collection and analysis as it pertains to your planned field observation?
•Note: You are NOT going to turn in field notes as you are not conducting a study this semester.

After reading the article – Creswell (Chapter 8) & Video on Qualitative Data Analysis” and watching the video on Qualitative Data Analysis, please discuss the following and respond to at least two of your peers:

1) As you consider the type of proposal you are writing, which type of approach data analysis best fits with your research questions and type of research you are proposing? (narrative, ethnography, phenomenology, case study, grounded theory); please reference Creswell & Poth & “Coding of Qualitative Data” and the short video. Please explain why you think a given approach to analysis of the data fits within your research proposal. Please cite the text and reference the video.
