Directions: Each student will choose a primary document from the list in the Writing Assignment #1 Module on Canvas. Students will then write a three-paragraph response (at least 500 words) analyzing their document. Your short essay should have a thesis statement at the end of your first paragraph outlining your interpretation of the document in argument form. Your paper must also provide specific examples from the text, and incorporate information from Building the American Republic. To support your thesis and analysis of the source, you should provide relevant context, explain the documents perspective, analyze what the document is arguing, and discuss what the document reveals about the Revolutionary Era. Or in other words, you should expand on the questions included in the courses document worksheet in essay format. You are not pretending to be the documents author you are using the documents point of view as a window into this controversial past event. In order to provide a comprehensive response, you should address the following somewhere in your paper: Basic Document Information: What type of document is it? Who is the author Who is the intended audience? Context: When was the document written? What relevant context is needed to understand the document? e. was it written before Lexington and Concord or after the Declaration of Independence was announced? Purpose and Argument: What is the goal of the document? What is it specifically arguing? Is the author for or against the Revolution? Why or why not? What course of action is the document urging? And why? Significance: What does the document reveal about the Revolutionary Era? How does the document support or challenge our understanding of the era?
