Colt thought that his use of technology was going to help his work-life balance. Colt had three children ranging in age from 4 to 10. When he was given the option to telecommute, he was thrilled—his dream had come true. He would no longer have to drive back and forth through rush-hour traffic. His children would no longer have to go to the Latchkey program after school. He could set his own hours—as long as everything was completed by the preset deadlines. Yet Colt’s dream quickly turned into a nightmare. For example, because he was “home” all day, his partner and mother would ask him to run errands for them because they had to be at work, his neighbor would drop by to chat, and his friends would insist that he meet them for lunch since he was “free.” As for his children, they had a difficult time understanding that daddy was working even though he was in the house. When they arrived home at 3:00 p.m., there was a constant demand for his help and/or attention. As a result, Colt found himself working until the wee hours of the morning trying to get his projects completed. Work life and home life had blurred into one big blob, which included absolutely no downtime for Colt.
