(Not Wikipedia). Scholarly sources include journals (many of which can accessed online through the Ryerson library portal) or books (which can be accessed in person at the library). **For both written assignments, please use Chicago Manual of Style Notes and Bibliography version for your formatting and citations. A short guide to the style is on D2L. Additional notes: Find two films that share similarities -such as country of origin, story, genre etc. that are 10-20 years apart. Spend 1/4 of your essay justifying your choice, ie. outlining the similarities. Spend the rest of the paper describing the differences and analyzing the root or reason for the differences. This would usually mean looking at what is happening in film history terms (technological, philosophical, aesthetic, the business of film) and what is happening in the world. (politics, audience, social attitudes). The reasons for the differences will have to be researched using academic sources. Even films that appear very similar, if there is a significant time gap, once considered carefully, will reveal key differences. This is the work of the historical essay: to reveal and explain change. Don’t hesitate to offer a critical reading and to dive into the providence of the individual films, if doing so, deepens our understanding of the similarities and/or differences. A thesis statement at the beginning of the paper should be written after all the research is done and (sometimes after you have done all the writing). It does not have to be a grand theory. In one sentence describe what your paper is doing, i.e. what the point of your essay is. Director chosen: Agnes Varda Films: -The Gleaners and I (2000) -La Pointe Courte (1956)
