Everyday Use by Alice Walker: https://harpers.org/archive/1973/04/everyday-use Then, write a 1100-1200 word (4-5 page) essay on the following prompt: How does the author of the story you’ve chosen use specific literary elements and/or devices to relay his or her argument about an aspect of “real life” (societal norms, conflicts, etc.)? Explain and discuss how the author uses each element or device and why each is used within the story. Use specific examples/quotes from the text and at least one outside source (literary critique) to support your analysis. You may use personal examples or real life events to support your analysis, if appropriate. Note: There is no need to summarize the short story; assume your readers have already read the stories. Focus on analyzing NOT summarizing. Summarize only if it is necessary for your readers to understand your analysis. And, remember—the key to a good analysis essay is to ask and address “how” and “why” questions relating to the prompt as you are writing, without actually writing the questions in your essay. Your FINAL DRAFT of this essay should: Be at least 4 full pages Be in MLA format (12pt. font, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, proper headers, double-spaced, etc.) Be in academic writing style (ie. no second person “you”, inappropriate use of first person “I”, etc.) Have proper essay structure Have properly formatted in-text citations (using handout page numbers or textbook page numbers) Have a properly formatted Work(s) Cited page – Cited from the website or on the pdf file.
