We read two speeches by Martin Luther King, Jr. – “Sermon at Temple Israel of Hollywood” and “Beyond Vietnam.” How do those two speeches relate to what is going on in the United States in 2021? Does Cornel West also speak to these issues? In other words, how do ethical considerations emanating from the movement for civil rights from the 1960s to the present time speak to other aspects of ethical human behavior, both individually and governmentally in the United States? Do you think it is just/wise/impractical/unworthy to extend the push for African American equality to other realms of society? What can be gained by keeping either a narrow focus or a broader one when it comes to the black civil rights movement?
